How to View Transits Using an Ephemeris

An ephemeris is a table that shows the daily positions of planets in the sky. Before astrology apps and software, astrologers used ephemerides to track transits manually—and many still do!

To use an ephemeris:

  1. Find a planetary ephemeris. You can use a physical astrology book, a PDF, or an online version like Astro.com’s Ephemeris.

  2. Locate today’s date or a date you’re curious about. Each day lists the exact zodiac degree of every planet at either midnight or noon universal time, depending on the ephemeris.

  3. Compare the planet positions to your natal chart. If a planet is near the same degree as one of your natal planets (or making a key aspect), that transit is influencing your chart.

  4. Look at long-term transits. Slow-moving planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto spend months or years in a single house, creating extended cycles of growth, challenge, or transformation.

Using an ephemeris helps you see planetary cycles at a glance, giving you more control over how you work with astrological timing.

  • Read below for more details on aspects and how transits influence your life.

The "TV Show" of Your Life: Key Players and Plotlines

Think of your life as a multi-season epic. Each transit marks a new scene, episode, or season with each introducing characters (planets), settings (houses), and themes (aspects). Every chart interaction builds on the last, shaping your personal and cosmic journey. Here's how to start understanding the narrative:

1. Set the Scene: Your House Themes

Every chart has 12 houses, each representing areas of life such as relationships, career, or self-expression.

Here’s a short list of house themes for each house in astrology, for a more extended post about the astrology houses check this post out:

  1. First House (Ascendant): Self, identity, appearance, personal beginnings, how you present yourself to the world.

  2. Second House: Finances, personal values, possessions, self-worth, and material security.

  3. Third House: Communication, siblings, local travel, learning, and the immediate environment.

  4. Fourth House: Home, family, roots, emotional foundations, and private life.

  5. Fifth House: Creativity, romance, fun, hobbies, children, and self-expression.

  6. Sixth House: Work, health, daily routines, service, and personal habits.

  7. Seventh House: Partnerships, relationships, contracts, and the 'other.'

  8. Eighth House: Shared resources, transformation, intimacy, death/rebirth, and inheritances.

  9. Ninth House: Higher education, travel, philosophy, belief systems, and exploration.

  10. Tenth House: Career, public image, reputation, and long-term goals.

  11. Eleventh House: Friendships, community, social networks, and aspirations.

  12. Twelfth House: Subconscious, spirituality, hidden matters, solitude, and endings.

Action Step: Identify Your House Rulerships

1️⃣ Use a free online chart calculator (like Astro.com or Astro-Seek) to generate your natal chart and find your rising sign.

2️⃣ Look at the zodiac signs on the house cusps—these are the signs that rule each house. (The house cusp is where the "pizza slice" begins.)

3️⃣ Identify which sign rules each house by noting which zodiac sign is at the start of each house in your chart.

4️⃣ Research what it means by searching: “[Zodiac Sign] ruling the [House Number] house” to explore its themes.

This will help you uncover the backdrop of your personal story and how different areas of life are shaped by each sign’s influence

For example in this chart the person has a Sagittarius ruled 2nd house. So they would google "Sagittarius ruling 2nd house" and then read til they feel like they have an understanding of that setting.

The line between the 1st house and the 2nd house is the 2nd house cusp. This is inside of the Sagittarius section, so Sagittarius rules the 2nd house in this chart.

2. The Main Players: Planets and Their Roles

Astrological transits come to life when you understand the core energy each planet represents. These energies shape how transits affect your emotions, actions, and experiences. Here’s a quick guide to the planets and their roles:

  • The Sun: Represents your core identity, vitality, and sense of purpose. Sun transits often highlight themes of self-expression and personal growth.

  • The Moon: Governs emotions, intuition, and your inner world. Moon transits are quick but impactful, influencing your moods and emotional responses.

  • Mercury: Rules communication, thoughts, and decision-making. Mercury transits can bring clarity, focus, or even challenges like misunderstandings (hello, Mercury retrograde!).

  • Venus: Reflects love, relationships, and beauty. Venus transits often bring harmony, creativity, or a focus on values and personal connections.

  • Mars: Governs energy, action, and drive. Mars transits push you to take initiative but can also stir up frustration or conflict if energy isn’t channeled properly.

  • Jupiter: Represents expansion, abundance, and opportunities for growth. Jupiter transits encourage optimism and big-picture thinking.

  • Saturn: Symbolizes discipline, structure, and responsibility. Saturn transits often feel heavy but lead to long-term growth and stability when handled with patience.

  • Uranus: Brings sudden changes, innovation, and breakthroughs. Uranus transits shake up routines to push you toward growth and authenticity.

  • Neptune: Governs dreams, intuition, and spirituality. Neptune transits can bring inspiration or confusion, blurring the line between reality and imagination.

  • Pluto: Represents transformation, power, and rebirth. Pluto transits are deeply transformative, often requiring you to confront fears or let go of the past.

How to Work With Planetary Transits Intentionally

Understanding transits is one thing—learning to work with them intentionally is where astrology becomes a powerful tool for growth. Each planet moves through your chart at its own pace, influencing different areas of life. Here’s how you can use this knowledge to navigate cycles with awareness.

To identify key transits in your chart, pay attention to planets aspecting your Sun, Moon, or Rising sign, as well as personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars). These transits often have the most noticeable effects on daily life and personal growth.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Transits

Some planetary movements bring quick, noticeable shifts, while others unfold over months or years:

  • Fast-moving planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) influence daily and monthly rhythms. These transits bring mood shifts, short-term energy boosts, or obstacles that pass quickly.

  • Slow-moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) shape long-term cycles of growth, challenge, and transformation. Their transits may not feel obvious day-to-day, but they mark major turning points over time.

Navigating Key Planetary Transits

Mercury Retrograde: Rethink, Reassess, and Adjust

Mercury retrogrades are infamous for miscommunications and delays, but they’re also valuable for reflection and refinement. Instead of forcing forward motion, use this time to revisit plans, refine ideas, and clear up unfinished tasks.

Eclipses: Turning Points & Big Life Shifts

Eclipses illuminate hidden patterns and initiate change in the areas of life they activate. These are not times for forced action—instead, they reveal what’s ready to shift, end, or evolve.

Saturn Returns: Maturity, Responsibility & Life Restructuring

Saturn Returns (around ages 28-30, 58-60, and 88-90) mark a major period of personal and structural maturation. These cycles bring serious life evaluations, challenging you to commit to your true path and release what no longer serves you.

🎯 Jupiter & Yearly Planning: Growth, Expansion & Opportunities

Jupiter spends about a year in each sign, setting the tone for where growth and expansion happen in your life. Tracking your yearly Jupiter transit can help you plan new opportunities, take risks, or align your focus with what’s naturally unfolding.

Now that you understand how transits work and how to apply them, let’s look at how you can start tracking them in your own chart.

How to Start Tracking Your Personal Transits

Certain transits follow predictable cycles—Saturn returns every 29 years, while Jupiter transits bring new growth opportunities in each part of the chart every 12 years. Recognizing these recurring patterns helps you anticipate major shifts in your personal evolution.

  • Pay attention to the themes that come up during these planetary cycles—are you feeling blocked? Energized? Called to change direction?

  • Use an planner, journal app with tags, or ephemeris to track patterns over time.

  • Follow major transits in your chart (like outer planet transits to your natal Sun, Moon, or Ascendant) to see what areas of life are evolving.

As you become more aware of transits, you’ll learn to flow with planetary timing instead of feeling at its mercy.

What About The Outer Planets

If slow moving planets are currently transiting through a sign in your chart (for example Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, or Saturn, then they are indicating long processes that you are going through as an individual. Think of these as seasons in your TV series. Pluto will transit Aquarius from 2024 - 2044. So this is a major plot line in your development. Saturn on the other hand will only transit a sign for 3 years at a time, meaning that those plot lines will be notable, but will probably carry on for a "few episodes".

Action Step: locate what sign each planet in the sky is in currently and research what that means for your chart. If Saturn is in Pisces in the sky, than he is transiting Pisces in your natal chart. If Pisces rules your 5th house, than Saturn is transiting your 5th house. Research this by typing in "Saturn transit 5th house".

3. The Aspects: Dynamic Story Lines

Aspects describe the relationships between planets in your chart. They create the drama, opportunities, or tension you experience.

Key aspects include:

  • Conjunctions: 0 degrees apart, the same sign - A blending of energies for powerful transformations.

  • Trines: 120 degrees apart, the same element - Supportive, easy-flowing opportunities.

  • Squares: 90 degrees apart, - the same mode/different polarity - Tension that drives growth through challenges.

  • Sextiles: 180 degrees apart - the same mode/same polarity - Quiet opportunities for collaboration or progress.

There are two types of aspects:

  1. Natal Aspects - These are aspects that happen between two or more planets in your chart at birth. These planets were in communication during your birth, and they will describe an energy that you will work with your entire life.

  2. Transit Aspects - These are aspects that are happening between the current position of the planets and your birth placements (natal placements). These are energies that will wax and wane, and describe circumstances that will change over your life.

For example, if Saturn in Aquarius trines your Gemini Moon in your natal chart, you might find it easier to establish emotional stability and mature in your communication. If transiting Saturn in Aquarius trines your Natal Gemini Moon you might feel like you're seeking new ways to take care of your emotional health for this time in your life by looking at your boundaries with your mother.

Action Step: locate where each planet is in the sky, and see how that matches up to your astrology chart. If there are planets that are close in degree to the locations they were at the time of your birth, they are making conversations.

For example

The current planets shows that Jupiter is at 15 degrees of Gemini. If I have planets around 15 degrees (from 10-20 degrees) than Jupiter is having a conversation with those planets in my chart. This is called "aspecting".

4. New Moons and Full Moons: A Sneak Peek at What’s to Come and Whats to Go

New Moons act like pilot episodes, introducing themes that unfold over the next six months. They’re subtle, often unassuming, but significant.

Reflect on recent new beginnings house. What loose ends are being tied up? What exciting new opportunities are coming into view?

Action Step: Take note of when and what signs the most recent and upcoming New and Full Moons are taking place in. This will help you see what house is activated in your chart. See if you can predict what priorities will become activated and journal on these themes to start connecting the dots and understanding what your “next chapter” might look like.

5. Your Personal Cosmic Cliffhanger

With each planetary transit, astrology hands you a new script. Will you rise to the challenge? Will you embrace the opportunities?

This isn’t about predicting every plot twist—it’s about understanding your role as the main character. When you reflect on past transits, you can see how they’ve shaped you and better prepare for what’s ahead.
